Shaka Johnson joined the Upson County leadership team as the Recreation Director for the Thomaston – Upson Civic Center and facilities in November of 2020. In her current role, she manages athletics, events, programs, as well as several facilities. Under her direction the recreation center recently received four District awards for – Outstanding Program, Outstanding Project, Maintenance Professional, and Supportive Staff Member. She has taken the lead on major projects for the Civic Center which focuses on renovating facilities, athletic fields, and complexes.
Prior to serving as the Director for Thomaston-Upson, Johnson led The City of Riverdale in many innovative athletic projects and propelled the standard to new heights. Her past employment experience includes working with organizations such as the NBA, NHL, UGA Athletics, and more.
Johnson currently serves on several GRPA (Georgia Recreation and Park Association) committees and is an advocate for track and field.
While attending the University of Georgia – Johnson was the captain of the Women’s track & field team and received many accolades such as SEC Field Event Freshman of the Year, 2 time SEC Champion, multiple Academic Honor Rolls, and currently holds two UGA Top 10 times - amongst other awards.
Johnson is a UGA graduate with an expertise in Sports Business.
